WFC MEETING MINUTES MAY 27, 2009
Present: Misty Smith, Karen Neurohr, Jen Macken, Merrall Price, Nicole Crethar, Robin Leech, Helen Clements, Michele Seikel and Tracy Boyer
Helen Clements (Chair) called the meeting to order at 11:35 a.m.
Approval of April Minutes:
• There was a motion to approve minutes with corrections; the motion was seconded
and all in favor. April minutes were approved as corrected.
Announcements – WFC Officers for 2009-2010:
• Chair – Merrall Price
• Vice-Chair – Michele Seikel
• Secretary/Treasurer – Misty Smith
• Faculty Council Liaison – Barbara Miller
Other Announcements:
• ADVANCE Team Survey Report
o 619 responses to the survey
o Well over 1/3 of the faculty
• Gender/Women’s Studies Classes and Programming for Academic Year 2009-2010
o Handout of classes in Gender and Women’s Studies that are being offered in the Fall 2009
Discussion of Future Direction for Day Care Initiatives:
• Need to follow up on Day Care Initiatives
• Technical writing class conducted a survey on interest in day care on campus
• Push day care issue as a diversity problem
• Write a grant for a feasibility study for approximately $20,000
Report on Contact with Dr. Jason Kirksey, New Head of Division of Institutional Diversity:
• Helen emailed Dr. Kirksey – waiting for response
Planning for Next Year’s Research Awards and Possible Participation in Research Week:
• Consult larger body about research week speaker
• Find out how much money we will have to pay a speaker
• Draft out criteria for speaker
• Look at women from this region within driving distance (OK, TX, KS, AR, CO) who
have made a career out of women’s research
• Discussed possible speakers for research week (Native Americans, possibly)
o Maybe a panel with around 3 speakers
o Ask student group association to participate in panel (Native American Student
Association)
• Will work on putting a form online to fill out instead of sending flyers out
about Research Awards
• Extend deadline to January 1
• Discussed pros and cons of participating in Research Week
Other Women’s Issues for WFC Consideration:
• Ask entire membership about what issues are important to them
Other Business:
• Jen Macken would like to ask the entire membership if anyone would like her to
come to a class and speak about women’s studies
• Jen also mentioned that she is the incoming Vice Chair of GLBT if WFC would want
to partner with them for anything
